Rules & Regulations of Hill Institute

The purpose of the adult classes at Hill Institute is to teach the student to be proficient in a particular craft or skill. To achieve this goal, the ratio of students to teacher will be limited in number so that the teacher has time to provide instruction and guidance to all students. Students must be 18 years or older to register for the adult classes. All classes are adult classes unless the class name and/or accompanying description indicate that the class is for youths and/or teens.

Because some of the machinery and equipment used in the courses, such as but not limited to quilting, sewing, and woodworking, can be dangerous, each student MUST have the physical and mental skills to operate the equipment.

For Spring Semester:  Safety Rules & Guidelines in the Woodshop AND the Proper Usage of Machinery will be discussed BEFORE the first scheduled class. The day and time will be determined by the instructor and shared with the student at registration. Attendance is mandatory for all new woodworking, furniture making, and boat making students. If a student is unable to attend the safety protocol meeting for an extraordinary reason, they must notify the instructor and Office when they register for the class. The instructor or Office will try to schedule a one-on-one session to discuss the safety protocols with the student prior to the first class. The scheduling of this safety protocol meeting is dependent on the instructors’ availability and woodshop access. The student will be charged a fee of $30 for the one-on-one session, due at the time of this special, but critically important make-up session (checks should be made payable to Hill Institute). If, for any reason, a meeting cannot be arranged, the student will not be permitted to take the course, and they will receive a full tuition refund. Students will NOT be permitted to attend class without this review of safety protocols. Thank you for understanding the importance of safety.

For Fall Semester:  Safety Rules & Guidelines in the Woodshop AND the Proper Usage of Machinery are discussed during the first session in all woodworking, furniture making, and boat making courses; therefore, the attendance of all students for the first session is mandatory. If a student is unable to attend the first session for an extraordinary reason, they must notify the Office when they register for the class. The Office will notify the instructor promptly so that a one-on-one session can be scheduled to discuss the safety protocols with the student prior to the first class. The scheduling of this safety protocol meeting is dependent on the instructors’ availability and woodshop access. The student will NOT be permitted to attend class without this review of safety protocols. The student will be charged a fee of $30, due at the time of this special, but critically important make-up session (checks should be made payable to Hill Institute). If, for any reason, a meeting cannot be arranged, the student will not be permitted to take the course, and they will receive a full tuition refund. Thank you for understanding the importance of safety.

All Students who participate in any painting class at Hill Institute must adhere to this policy regarding the type of solvent used in class.  Due to concerns over indoor air quality, and due to some students and instructors experiencing negative health reactions (headaches and allergic reactions) to the use of certain solvents with high odor and VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions, the ONLY SOLVENT that is acceptable for use by painting class students is GAMSOL. Any student who violates this policy will be immediately removed from that day’s class.  Any student who willfully continues to violate this policy will be permanently expelled from Hill Institute.

Hill Institute reserves the right, at any time during the course, to decide whether a particular student is capable of participating in a course safely without putting himself/herself or others at risk; and whether a particular student is disruptive in class. This decision can be made at the sole discretion of the instructor at any point in the course. A student may appeal an instructor’s decision to the Administrator of Hill Institute. Students who are unable to participate safely, or who are disruptive in class will be withdrawn from the course, and the tuition will be refunded.

Hill Institute does not have storage facilities for work in progress. It is the responsibility of the student to transfer project materials or crafts to and from each class. Hill Institute is not responsible for the damage to, or loss or theft of, any of the student’s property.

Photography: Registered students may be photographed, video recorded, and/or filmed by an instructor, staff, and/or photographer contracted by Hill Institute. Attendance serves as permission for the use of images of students by Hill Institute. Hill Institute may utilize the photos and videos for various purposes including, but not limited to, print, film, and digital and social media, unless the student specifies in writing that they wish NOT to be photographed or recorded for such purposes.

Fire arms or weapons of any kind are prohibited from the school premises, including the student’s vehicle while it is in the Hill Institute parking lot.
