This course is designed for the beginning student. The instructor starts out by explaining how each of the machines in the woodshop works and how to properly and safely operate the equipment.
For the first project, beginning students choose from two options; for example, a Mission style mirror or a Shaker bench. If time permits, students who complete the project early may undertake a second project of his or her choice (with prior approval of the instructor). The instructor provides detailed instructions for completing the projects and assists each student based on his or her needs. Primary topics covered in this class are proper preparation of wood using shop tools and wood joinery – there are numerous ways in which to assemble the frame of a piece of furniture without using metal fasteners, such as mortise and tenon, dovetails, dado joints, rabbiting, half lap joints and slot joints. Students spend most of the semester learning about the mill work involved in creating each project. The last part of the course focuses on the final assembly of the project and finish choices to apply at home.
