Illuminated Letters, vividly colored and highlighted with gold, are a centuries-old feature of the book arts. This class will provide, for calligraphers and non-calligraphers alike, an introduction to the styles, materials, and techniques of this ancient craft as practiced in Europe. During the ten-week course, students will receive instruction in the step-by-step process of creating an illuminated letter of their choosing from the Medieval/Renaissance stylebook. Students will learn first how to draw and transfer their designs to archival paper, secondly to apply real gold leaf using a modern glue-based gilding size (flat guilding method), and lastly how to add vibrant color and details using designer’s gouache. No previous experience with calligraphic lettering is required but familiarity with the handling of watercolor paints & brushes will prove extremely helpful (but again not required).
