The primary focus of this class will be on learning Irish Half Uncial, the script employed in the most famous of all Celtic manuscripts, the Book of Kells. Along the way we will try a related calligraphic script (Uncial) and learn a simple technique for drawing Celtic knotwork patterns. These knotwork patterns, and the whimsical zoomorphic forms we will discover in period manuscripts, are an option to frame or adorn your Celtic calligraphy. While previous calligraphy experience will prove helpful, this class is also open to absolute beginners. The final weeks of class will have students using their newly acquired skills to craft a calligraphic project of their choice.
