Basketmaking (Mixed Levels) – Section 2

Join us for a hands-on journey in basket making with individualized attention that caters to all skill levels. Whether you are a curious beginner or an experienced weaver, this class offers a delightful blend of creativity and craftmanship.

We will focus on four different types of baskets depending on skill level.

For the beginner: You will create a beautiful market basket in the Shaker style that is both practical, functional, and aesthetically pleasing.

  • You will learn to craft a sturdy base with a D-shaped handle.
  • You will weave up the sides of the basket in the traditional under-over weaving technique while learning to shape your basket free hand.
  • For the finishing touch you will add a woven wrap to the handle.

For those with weaving experience: Our twill class offers some exciting challenges. By adding color to your basket and making it with the use of dyed weavers you will learn to create an interesting and beautiful pattern up the side of the basket. You have the option to create what is called a Basic Twill Market Basket. This basket has a simple and distinctive design up the side, creating a functional work of art.  If you would like a more challenging experience the 1, 2, 3 Twill Basket creates an extraordinary diagonal design up the side of the basket that results in a stunning basket for all to admire.

The Twill Weave Market Basket

  • You will learn to craft a rectangular twill base with a D-shaped handle.
  • You will learn to weave in an over-two, under-two pattern up the side of the basket row by row to create a simple and distinctive design.

1, 2, 3 Twill Basket

  • You will learn to create a square twill base.
  • You will learn to weave up the sides of the basket in the 1,2,3 twill pattern, as you transition from a square shape to a round shape.

For the weaver looking to try a new technique; Immerse yourself in the simplicity and elegance of Wicker basketry. Create a functional and decorative round basket.

  • You will learn to weave a round base using the traditional Japanese weave of over- two, under-one continuous weave.
  • You will learn to weave your basket using a 3-rod wale technique. This will create a spiral pattern up the side.
  • You will learn to secure the weavers in place with a rolled boarder.
  • A wrapped handle will be added for the finishing touch.

Students are responsible for purchasing their own tools and material, a list will be provided at registration.
